In the village of Voukolies, just 27 km southwest of Chania, an old mill has been lovingly restored and brought back to life. Known as Mulino Veneziano, the mill is a tribute to the past—its name inspired by the local tradition of linking anything historic to the Venetian era, a time deeply rooted in Cretan memory.
Once one of many mills operating in the area, Mulino Veneziano now serves as a working museum, reviving the traditional grain-grinding process using a set of millstones. The method is simple yet ingenious: the bottom stone remains stationary, while the top stone rotates, and the small gap between them crushes the wheat grains into flour. Visitors are invited to explore the entire milling journey, from plowing the fields to the production of fresh flour. Through carefully curated exhibits and a fully functional mill, guests engage all their senses—hearing the rhythmic grinding, smelling the aroma of fresh flour, and touching the final product.
