The Monastery of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity), also known as the Tzagarolon Monastery, is one of the most important and visually striking monasteries in Crete. Located on the Akrotiri Peninsula, just a short drive from Chania, this historic site holds deep religious, cultural, and agricultural significance for the island. The monastery was founded in 1632 by two brothers, Ieremias and Lavrentios Tzagarolos, members of a prominent Venetian-Cretan family. Their influence bridged both the Orthodox population and the Catholic Venetians, making the monastery a center of spiritual life and education during Venetian rule.
Architecturally, the Monastery of Agia Triada is a masterpiece of Venetian and Orthodox design, surrounded by peaceful courtyards, chapels, and stone buildings that seem untouched by time. Its serene setting and impressive structure make it a must-see for visitors to western Crete. Beyond its religious significance, Agia Triada has long been associated with traditional Cretan farming. The monastery cultivates organic olive groves and vineyards, producing extra virgin olive oil, fine wines, and traditional tsikoudia (a local spirit). Visitors can also purchase pure thyme honey and balsamic vinegars infused with thyme honey or fresh orange—all made on site.
