Matala is a charming seaside village located 75 km southwest of Heraklion, famous for its unique cave-pocked cliffs and relaxed atmosphere. Set against the backdrop of a beautiful sandy beach and crystal-clear waters, Matala offers a blend of natural beauty, history, and alternative culture. The striking caves carved into the cliffs behind the beach date back to the Neolithic Age.
Originally used as tombs, they have also served as shelters and homes throughout the centuries. In the 1960s, Matala became a symbol of freedom and counterculture when German and English hippies "discovered" the caves and began living in them — just steps from the sea. Even Joni Mitchell famously referenced Matala in her song "Carey." Once home to just a few houses, Matala has grown into a small but lively village that thrives on tourism. Despite its popularity, it has preserved its laid-back, bohemian charm.
