to Kournas Lake

Lake Kournas is a true natural gem—the only freshwater lake in Crete—nestled in a lush valley at the foot of the White Mountains, just a short drive from both Rethymno and Chania. With a perimeter of approximately 3.5 km, the lake offers a peaceful escape surrounded by greenery, gentle hills, and inviting waters. Shrouded in myth and mystery, local legend claims the lake is bottomless, a belief sparked by the deep, dark color of its waters. While scientists have confirmed that the lake has a maximum depth of around 22 meters, the tales persist—along with stories of strange electromagnetic fields that some say cause either unease or an unexpected sense of well-being. According to tradition, a nymph is said to live in the lake, preserving its magical atmosphere.

Kournas Lake is also an ecologically important wetland, home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, including ducks, eels, turtles, and migratory birds. Its ecological value has earned it a place in the Natura 2000 protection network. Today, visitors can swim, rent a paddle boat, or simply relax at the lakeside tavernas and cafés. The surrounding area is ideal for walking and birdwatching, offering moments of serenity in a truly unique landscape.
