to Balos

The famous Balos Lagoon is a breathtaking natural wonder located about 56 km northwest of Chania, nestled between Cape Gramvousa and the small Cape Tigani. This unique lagoon is formed by a massive rock in the sea connected to the mainland by a sandy peninsula, creating an expansive, pristine beach.
Balos is celebrated for its shallow, warm waters shimmering in bright turquoise hues and its wild, unspoiled natural beauty. The sand in many areas has a delicate pinkish tint, created by millions of crushed shells, adding to the lagoon’s exotic charm. Known as the most photographed beach in Crete, Balos is often described as a true paradise. Rumor has it that even Prince Charles and Princess Diana visited Balos on their honeymoon aboard their private yacht.
The lagoon is also a protected area under the Natura 2000 programme, home to many rare species of flora and fauna, including the famous Caretta caretta turtles, cormorants, and falcons, making it a haven for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts
